The candidates are spreading misinformation --- because it works

It is endlessly frustrating to me that the candidates can look at the American people and LIE.  I’m not talking about a misspeak or a confused statistic or a slight exaggeration, I’m talking about flat-out deliberate dissemination of misinformation.

Unfortunately, it works.  When McCain repeatedly says “Obama will raise taxes on people who make as little as $42,000 per year” in debates, ads and any media-op, the American public begins to believe.  It’s not true.  FactCheck.org, the nonpartisan, nonprofit, “consumer advocate” for voters, has verified the tax increases are on families making over $250,000.  But people remember this claim and believe it.

Obama claims his policy would cut taxes for 95% of Americans.  According to FactCheck.org, the figure works out to be 81% of households.  Do 95% of people live in these 81% of households?  Maybe, but probably not.

While the “whopper-telling tally” seems to show that Obama exaggerates and McCain deliberately misleads, it’s unacceptable.  Freedom of speech is one thing but after the “let’s go to war because they have WMDs” debacle, Americans should demand the facts from their candidates.
